The full name of this movie is Borat Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. As soon as I heard the name, I knew that I was going to see it.
I first saw Borat on the Ali G show in the UK. He was mildly funny.
Ali G in the UK was brilliant because the English have this blind pragmatic manner to deal with idiots. Thus, Ali G was perfect for leading judges and lords into ridiculous statements.
In the US, though Americans didn’t fall for Ali G as much. They’re much more cynical, which made the HBO version of the Ali G Show out to lunch with no dessert.
What works like melted butter on crab cakes, though was Borat, a fictitious Kazahkstani reporter who was culturally ignorant. Americans, with their political correctness and shallow knowledge of Central Asian countries, bit hard into the routine.
So, it was with some anticipation that I went to the sneak peek premiere of Borat on Saturday night. the theatre was filled with anxious Australians, and right from the start of the film, the bursts of laughter erupted like machine gun fire.
See for yourself:
What pleased and surprised me the most about the film is that the Borat interviews are cobbled together in a cohesive plot. It’s not just random comedy bits, but an actual movie, with bears and gypsy tears.
Many reviewers have been disappointed with the film, especially after the deluge of media hype and viral videos. I imagine they were expecting Doctor Zhivago.
I expected Borat and nothing more. It was hilarious.
I say: It’s a film to laugh at crude slapstick humour, but also to be horrified at what the average American says. Many of the people in the film are trying to sue Borat, saying he discredited them, but really all that was made available was their honest opinion on Jews and minorities.
See it for: There’s no one moment that defines this film. it’s just 84 minutes of shock and outrage. After this, the Borat character has to be retired, forever, I think.
