Some of the best times I can think of in memory are the times when summer would come around and it would be little league baseball season. At that time in history baseball was an everyday sport played whether there was a park available or a street devoid of heavy traffic. Therefore, it was in this spirit that I went to view the film Mr. 3000 starring Bernie Mac.
Bernie Mac plays a character (Stan) that is all about himself’ and not the team. Sure he has god given talent galore’ but what is missing is the concept of team sports. It is a lesson that all children and adults should learn at one point in their life’ and it would be even better if everyone could put it into practice. We fast-forward several years to the future (enough time that Bernie has fallen into the no work out diet) to find out that Mr. 3000 is anything but that. he has fallen short of the number that would guarantee his inclusion to the hall of fame by three hits. Never one to mope’ Bernie takes it upon himself to get those three little hits and redeem his spot in history.
In addition to this story line we have a secondary one which gives us a chance to see if Stan has really changed. When his old flame Mo (Angela Bassett) is sent to cover his re-entry into the game the sparks fly. Their chemistry together was very good’ and you find yourself rooting for this couple who have went through so much.
I really enjoyed this film. It tries to input some sort of message about being a team player (a theme every good baseball player knows)’ and tries to ride it into the sunset. Of course, ‘ the comedy of Bernie Mac is always excellent’ and there are some scenes that are absolutely hilarious. With baseball season winding down you might want to take a look at this before it leaves the cineplex. It will give you that good old baseball feeling for sure.
