Denzel Washington stars as Creasy’ a former operative who lives with the ghosts of what he has done in the past. Taking his burnt out’ highly alcoholic talents to Mexico City’ he searches for a new beginning. He finds a second chance’ working as a bodyguard to a little girl who is wise beyond her years. Through their growing relationship he begins to change to the man he once might have been.

The part of him that he thought might have been erased from all of his years of killing. With her by his side, he begins to feel human again. Now if the film had dwelt on the growing relationship of Creasy (Denzel Washington) and Pita (Dakota Fanning) it well could have been bringing up talks of another Oscar for some of the stars.

Their chemistry together was that fun to watch. Nevertheless, in front of the Drama that is displayed is the little word ACTION’ and I am sorry to say that is when the movie goes down hill a bit. With Pita kidnapped ‘and her dialogue with Creasy put on hold’, all we are left with is vengeance. Creasy delivers’ filling the hole that has been left in his heart by her kidnapping with the screams he can elicit out of the men who carried out the order.

Director Tony Scott (Spy Game’ Enemy of the State) seems to have taken direction from Quentin Tarantino in this one’ only he has forgotten to split the two and a half hour movie into two parts. Although not as bloody as the abovementioned film’ I can almost guarantee that he brings the mental violence to greater heights.

I hate to say it but after the kidnapping of the little girl under his care’ I did not care too much for Denzel’s character. The compassion was gone. There was no remorse for the actions he was taking’ and it led me to think that his character had fallen back into the hole that he had spent the first half of the film climbing out of. Dakota Fanning would have to be my stand out performance in this film. She brought a very human and engaging quality to the screen’ and you can feel the quality go down when she is off screen.
