Short Summary

The second of three films featuring the exploits of renowned American archaeologist “Indiana Jones.” Stranded in India, Jones agrees to help a village recover an stolen ancient stone which the villagers believe has also led to the disppearance of their children.

Review

The weakest of the three adventures featuring the 1930s archaeologist, professor action hero, but it’s all relative, since a bad Indiana Jones film is still better than many directors’ best efforts. The film starts in Shanghai, where Jones (Ford) flees from a Chinese gangster, along with a lounge singer (Capshaw) and his 12-year old sidekick Short Round (Quan), but takes place primarily in India. Stuck in a village which has lost its sacred stone and many of its children with it Jones agrees to recover it from the mountaintop palace where the elders believe it has been taken. There, he makes a shocking discovery an ancient cult that is attempting to rise again, using the power of the “Sankara Stones” it has stolen to control the world. Jones and friends must then campaign, rescue the children that the cult has enslaved, and escape the terrifying Temple of DOOM.

The movie sputters early and often as the trio take forever to find there way to the palace and expose its evil undertakings. The terrible addition of Capshaw and far too many gross out take away from what should be a compelling premise. The story is not nearly as interesting as the film’s predecessor, Raiders of the Lost Ark or the trilogy concluding classic Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but it’s adequate when Capshaw isn’t doing her best to ruin it. Fortunately, just when you reach the point of thorough disappointment, the last 40 minutes redeem the overall product with some of the coolest chase scenes, effects and action sequences ever seen so realistic and memorable that they inspired an actual roller coaster. In the end, it’s a tad disappointing and not even in the same league as the two other films, but it still shouldn’t be missed.
