A group of college friends head up to a remote cabin to party, fornicate (that’s a fancy word for fuck), drink and smoke a lot of weed. Once the party starts and the moon comes up, a real party animal shows up and crashes the little get together. The strange part is, well aside from the carnage and bloodshed, is that the wolf also wants to party, drink and fuck (a not so fancy word for fornicate).

HOWL! I have to admit from the box art and back cover plot synopsis, I wasn’t expecting too much from this one and I got exactly what I expected, but Big Bad Wolf also had a few surprises and moments during the film that may make it one to put on the shelf someday.

Ya got the dorky hero, the jock, tough punk chick, prissy bitch and a couple of stoner friends, nothing new here as we all know, but once the moon gets full our werewolf shows up and things get not only bloody, but also pretty damn entertaining. After a pretty hardcore scene at the cabin setting that has some decent T&A and some fairly good gore, our story shifts into a little different vibe as we get some more back story on the hero of our tale Derek Crowely and his very bizarre family unit.

Derek is a complete puss and horrible character and Trevor Duke, who portrays him, isn’t much better, the whole time he is onscreen I kept thinking to myself “Damn, this guy must be some sort of retarded clone of Owen Wilson”. And his big action sequences are literally a howl, but in the comedic sense. Derek is backed up by his girlfriend Sam, a sweet little redheaded dish who is as bad as she can be. She can also do everything from fix a car to shoot arrows with knives duct taped on them with great accuracy.

But enough of these dipshits let’s get to the wolf of the story, and what a beast he is. I really enjoyed the wolf in this flick as he is a good mix of old school with a bit of the new. The look is a plain, and better than most B horror flick, man in a suit, but what I liked best is: like Lon Chaney Jr in The Wolfman, this beastie wears slacks!

He also doesn’t mind cracking one liners and doing a little doggie-style along the way. Actor Richard Tyson does a great job in the film and I enjoyed his performance both in and out of the suit.

Big Bad Wolf borrows bits and pieces from everything from The Wolfman to Ginger Snaps and there is even a great cameo by one of horror’s most beloved all time lycanthropes. Yeah this Big Bad Wolf huffs and puffs and you may even expect it to blow, but it’s actually a lot of fun in a campy cult kind of way.
