When a group of random individuals are given free passes for a movie at the grand reopening of the Metropol Theater, they think they are getting to be a test audience for a new film. Greeted by a red-haired, fair skin beauty of an usher with a sinister grin, they are lead to their seats to begin the show. A horror film about a mask that brings forth demons begins and events in the theater quickly begin to match those on the movie. Trapped inside, it is now a battle to stay alive.
Brought to you by Dario Argento, Demons or Demoni was a classic rental back in the day. From the gruesome cover box to the gorefest found inside, Demons is pure celluloid candy for any fan of the Italian horror film.
Basically the plot is simple. Put about 35 people in a theater, have one become infected by a demonic mask, have that one attack others and spread the demon cooties, turning others into demons and so on and so on until only a couple are left. Don’t bother getting attached to many of the characters as everyone is on the menu in this one. Although my personal favorite is Tony.
Tony is one bad ass pimp mac daddy of a brother who once the shit goes down ain’t afraid to stick a stiletto in some demon ass. There is also a father daughter combo in the theater as well. The father is blind (Why in the hell was he there to watch a movie?) and his daughter is there to have a little rendezvous with her boyfriend and quickly winds up more buttery than her popcorn, other than that a lot of teens and other folk for a variety of bloody deaths.
The gore is ample and gooey. There are plenty of bubbling sores, puss-spewing boils, and gaping holes, kinda like my first girlfriend. There is also about five different throat ripping out scenes that you only seem to find in the Italian style horror films. We even get a demon ripping out of a poor victims back. All this and a Motley Crüe and Billy Idol soundtrack to boot.
Although the ending is good, how it happens is completely outrageous and totally unbelievable. Demons is an excellent flick for the gore hound out there, but the ending and some of the dialog was just way to hard for me to get into.
