This is the official synopsis of new British horror film Bone Breaker. Sounds typical, doesn’t it? What if I told you that this isn’t even close to the actual plot of the film? Well, it isn’t. But don’t get your hopes high, the truth is worse than that.
YouTube fitness “content creators” Emily (Rachel Bright, King Of Crime) and Ruby (Lucy Aarden, Death Race 4: Beyond Anarchy) are now headed to the forest with aspiring newcomer Rachel (Sophie Jones). Grace (Jade Colucci) has given the green light to shoot their new video on the woodlands she owns. What started as a regular shooting weekend soon turns into a nightmare as they find themselves target for some insane hunting game.
Nicholas Winter, who is both the writer and director of Bone Breaker, seems to have a different and somehow lazy perspective towards creative storytelling. First, he seems to have watched a few versions of The Most Dangerous Game and lifted a few backwoods slasher cliches and thought to himself ‘Voila, a masterpiece.’ To top it all, he even termed the lead character in Bone Breaker as Bone Breaker ‘huntress’ instead of ‘hunter’ To be fair, that is not a spoiler. In the prologue, he does not show the killer, but utilizes voice so the audience has a fair understanding of who its Bonebreaker Huntress is. Later on, the character proceeds to attack people while casually laying down the rules of her game.
Bone Breaker is not a suspenseful film by any means, and that remains true when it comes to the murders. Thankfully, the mindless chattering between Emily and Ruby provides some sweet relief from the relentless antagonism. They are not friends by any means, but instead enemies who are ready to attack each other in order to win the favor of their sponsors and gather some petty resources. Cattiness among participants gets old fast. The audience is aware of who the last woman standing will be. But, there arises the dilemma of how exactly she is going to reach such heights. She sustains quite an unpleasant injury rather early on which makes her an easy target.
That gets us to another problem. IMDB claims Bone Breaker’s budget was somewhere around $425,000, which seems a lot, but there are almost no effects. When a crowbar impales someone, there is no blood. And, when the sledgehammer does come into play, it’s usually on a body off-screen. It’s hard to imagine why there are so many mistakes in the movie. Either, there is a lot of cocaine being done on the set, or that budget has had a couple of digits added to it.
