I too quit watching FURRY NIGHTS in the first fifteen minutes of the film because it has really bad amateur acting, a poorly structured script, as well as poor production value. Regardless, I am glad I stuck with it because the film improves significantly by the time the absurd ending takes place.
While filming a monster movie, a group of amateur filmmakers stumbles upon a party in the woods where people are dressed in furry costumes. Furries are exactly what the name suggests; fans who dress up in fur-bearing animal suits and masks and, can engage in sexual activity with other fans anonymously. As one of the filmmakers shoots at a furry character thinking he is a bear, the costumed furries pull out weapons and begin hunting the filmmakers with chainsaws, machetes, and guns, and I ask, where were they hiding that chainsaw?
To everyone’s surprise, viewers of the movie don’t seem to ask the same question. The stupidity of the film makes me wonder if the crew had even had a proper script to work with. Whether the moderators of the film were even sane. The filmmakers themselves show up to an event as stupid as this wearing masks and crucifix chains. They even forgot to pay rent to the house and marked the budge with the covers. ‘Bart is sleeping at the apartment and watching Grey’s Anatomy. I wonder who did the editing on the film Furry Nights.
Sure, I understand that it’s a movie portrayed in a movie and is meant to make fun out of itself, but come on, is it that amusing? It is shocking how the filmmaker and other actors in the movie seem to appreciate it. The quality of the audio is questionable from the very first minute. As the earlier scenes progressed, the audio kept cutting out, making all the subplots extremely difficult to follow. Furthermore, there are numerous bridges that are either skipped entirely or glossed over by one of the characters, which is always a sign of low budget. There is supposedly a scene where a character takes a shot at a deer. At least, they mention it, but the audience doesn’t get to see it, which is a peculiar decision as it would serve as strong foreshadowing for the chaos that is about to unfold during the furry ambush.
This is perhaps the only bone I have to pick: the movie has no spine. I have seen a number of movie adaptations and this skulls the level of ‘soft core’ pornography. The party that the Furries have is almost G-rated as they merely rub against each other in make believe carnality while making whimsical squeaks. I get that they did not want to spoof a particular way someone expresses their sexuality, but I think it is worse to mock a sexual expression by depicting a Furry party in such a cavalier way. If they were more ambitious and didn’t go for the cartoon version of a Furry party, depicted with such cringe ‘creativity’, it could have lent some weight to the moment of the film which is supposedly meant to evoke that emotion.
Well, the first 30 minutes of FURRY NIGHTS is where the movie is horrible. The last 45 minutes of the film is very funny, has some gore and ultra-violence and feels amazing in comparison to the unreasonably slow and dull start the movie had. I mean, unlike the rest of FURRY NIGHTS, the beginning has poor pacing and the chainsaw monsters have to be armed with a stylishly frightening, machete. This movie also had a well-timed jump scare, that really embodies the feeling surrounding FURRY NIGHTS. Imagine if there were deviant psychopaths who were furries, now that’s a good shot.
Bringing the most outlandish parts of the furriers world as entertainment, now that’s some fun equipment. If only the first 20 minutes were as crazily brilliant like the last 45 minutes, I wouldn’t have hesitated recommending this absurd movie. There are also plenty of moments where the disguised actors seem to lose track of the scene and start to literally make it up on the spot. And I guess that is in the goal for this weird movie. Overall, there is a lot of disturbing felly this film carries, especially if you introduce a chainsaw or machete as weapons for the monsters. Now, casting a bunch of furriers as deranged psychopaths may offend some people but hey, at least it’s creepy.
FURRY NIGHTS is an uneven film, but the good news is, all the bad stuff is at the beginning. So, all the good stuff is reserved for the last half. If you happen to watch this film, just know that the awkward start has rough first scenes. Those scenes do get better over time, just stick it out.
