“The skill of Gymnastics. The Kill of Karate.”
That’s the tagline for Gymkata, a near legendary cult classic from the 80s which used the popularity of martial arts movies combined with the hype of American gymnastics.
As bad as the movie is, it’s almost beautiful to behold as at one point some studio executive looked at the proposed treatment and thought it would be a good idea to make a movie like this.
‘We can’t lose!’ he must’ve exclaimed.
Jesse Thorn, from The Sound of Young America, says that the director of Gymkata is the same director from Enter the Dragon. Noooo.
Naturally, it’s known to be awful. Nearly as bad as the dance scene from the infamous BMX movie.
Now, I’ve never seen Gymkata, so I can’t review it, though I desperately want to. Instead, I guess we’ll have to satisfy our curiosity with this music video, which uses footage from the notorious movie. And it looks bad. Real bad.
Now, don’t tell me that you don’t want to watch that. It’d be great for drinking games a shot everytime the main character ‘finds’ something that he can use as a horse. A shot everytime he’s conveniently knocked out to progress the story. A double shot everytime he does a random gymnastics trick to remind people that this is Gymkata.
