High Fidelity (2000)

I recently watched High Fidelity again it’s even better now that I’ve become old enough to be surly enough to be jaded. What?

It’s a 2000 film based on Nick Hornby’s novel, and the movie plays out like a giant clockwork golem great pacing, amazing narration and interesting dialogue make it so rewatchable.

The cast is stellar, naturally with John Cusack in the lead role, but Dyno-mite performances from a young and portly Jack Black, a ravishing Catherine Zeta Jones, an equally ravishing (in a totally different way) Lisa Bonet and Tim Robbins, a thinking man’s Steve McQueen. What?

By the end of the movie, you’ll feel refreshed, but oddly unsatisfied. After all, the apparent message of the movie seems so obvious, there was little point questioning it. Still, Cusack’s character is both fascinating to listen to, but also contemptible.

Even worse, it would seem his two employees, two music nerds who spend all their time making mix tapes and looking down on people in their little record shop. One of these abhorrent misfits is Jack Black’s character, and Black gives the performance of a lifetime with a character that gets about 10 minutes of on screen time. Here’s one of my favourite scenes:

Actually, I’ve got little to say about High Fidelity except that it’s an addictive movie.

What I will say is this: Catherine Zeta Jones plays one of Cusack’s ex-girlfriends, Charlie. Though they dress her up in 80’s fashion, and it all looks a little ridiculous, she still comes off as exquisite and glamourous, when the story moves on and she’s a high roller, it just fits.

When the couple was together, Cusack thought she was incredible beautiful, intelligent and vivacious. Years later, he tracks her down to find out why she broke up with him; she rambles on using words that mean nothing, and he realizes she’s boring and not that intelligent. she’s covering up by saying things that appear thoughtful.

It’s an interesting idea what if you tracked down your past lovers and used a discerning eye, once the attraction has faded? Yeah, you’d find it might be the same…

I say: A great film, one that I’d throw in on a rainy day. There sure is a lot of rain in this movie.

See it for: I dunno, this?
