Inner Demon is incredible for people that appreciate gruesome horror features. Especially for those that relish when a teenage girl strikes back at a deranged killer!
The trailer does not do Inner Demon justice. Although the teaser is much better, and that is why we have chosen to add that video at the end of this review.
In fact, I can find few faults with Inner Demon. This probably has a lot to do with the fact that I was entertained. It has rarely happened that we have been shown a teenage girl who really strikes back. Of course, it happens in films, but often it is because the girl suffered in some manner and then seeks to resolve it.
With Inner Demon, we simply get to know a girl, a teenager that knows how to fight. She has a goal in mind, and she will do everything to achieve it protect her little sister.
In order for our main protagonist, Sam, to show her survival skills, we have to have someone trying to kill her. And in Inner Demon, the danger comes in a very human form. Most of the danger is caused by ordinary people. Either as a result of people being evil by nature and taking pleasure in the act of inflicting pain on others.
Or because we let ourselves become the worst of ourselves in order to survive. In this case, to protect those that matter to us.
What makes it brilliant to portray evil within people is the fact that it is an effortless task. It is what makes it possible for this story to be made into a movie without a huge sum of budget. What is required, however, are some actors who can effectively interpret and carry out actions which portray the emotions that drive the story.
Inner Demon certainly got the right cast for this purpose. Sarah Jeavons is terrific as the girl who is desperately trying to stay alive. She brought to mind Sharni Vinson in You’re Next.
Unlike most films, in Inner Demon the main character does not possess any specialized skills that are supposed to keep her alive. She has only instincts, some brains and a tire iron which she does not so easily toss aside.
Particularly when we are already aware that the killers are extremely savage. They have long since strategized the steps needed to capture this girl and of course take pleasure in hurting other people. Out of sheer boredom and for entertainment rather.
Ursula Dabrowsky was the writer and director of Inner Demon and she did a fantastic job. It was very engaging as well as inspiring. Well, the only “negative critique” I have is that there are a couple of parts that were a bit too prolonged. But when I say “prolonged,” I literally mean 10-20 seconds. Just enough for me to catch on that it was too lengthy.
Inner Demon was completed and premiered in 2014 in the “A Night of Horror International Film Festival” in Australia, where it won Best Feature and Ursula Dabrowsky was also awarded Best Director.
Although it has been a couple of years, it is something that should be viewed. Since it is set in an Australian countryside, it definitely does not feel old. Really, the tale of kidnapping, torturing, and killing is always appealing.
I would be great to see something new from Ursula Dabrowsky, but nothing seems to be in the works at the moment. I hope this will change once people become aware of this movie.
