Restitution is an excellent example of how complex revenge can be. A phenomenon such as revenge can bring pain upon oneself, which in terms of the film, makes the character Restitution a deeply flawed figure. Danny Draven’s directorial style presents a masterpiece in Restitution. It explores the debt of vengeance in a manner most repayable.
A cinematographic piece on Ramsey blends images of nature along with captivating sounds. Draven knew that the viewer’s exposure to violence had to be gradual. Not an easy feat in getting the audience to believe what is shown on screen, but he knew that opening the film with something that pleases the eye is the perfect hook. “You are in good hands” is the promise that Draven decides to offer the audiences, knowing far too well he’ll have much to repay.
Restitution tells the story of a girl who wishes to avenge her family. Mark Allen’s screenplay portrays Mia’s (Coel Mahal) journey perfectly. She is fueled by a need to kill the big man who brutally executed her family and now kidnaps him. For years, Mia has daydreamed of enacting revenge on her family’s murderer, and now the time has come. The man who sits beside her is Jonathan Shores and she strongly believes that he is the beast who shredded her family, thus shattering her life. And now, she is ready to kill him.
Questions abound. Is Mia with the right man? Is she sane enough to distinguish between the guilty and harmless? Is Mia capable of achieving her goal? What does Mia actually want? Is it mere retaliation or is there something more profound?
This film stands out in the sense that it explores a deeper plot than what other revenge films cover. It challenges its viewers to make interpretations as the frames keep on changing. While the story set-up does look familiar, it evokes passing judgment on what ensues. Those who bear the “we have come across this situation before” mindset would not be way off. But Mark Allen’s screenplay and Danny Draven’s movie provide more than just one possibility to think about.
In the movie, there is another story being told at the same time and most likely you have not come across it especially in a horror flick. If you are not observant enough and do not give the film too much thought, you can lose track of the louzy details and the true essence of the movie. Make sure when watching Restitution that you are as alert and open-minded as possible.
