In starting, let me just say that Night of the Creeps is without question, my favorite cheesy, cheap ass b-flick of all time! I can’t explain why and I can’t put my finger on one single thing that makes it stand out to me, it just does, and I thoroughly enjoy myself every time I watch it, so take that bias in mind during this review.
Set the wayback machine to the 50’s, an ugly cherub like alien holding a strange canister is running away from some other disturbing, cherub like aliens, the pursued jettison’s the canister which contains an “experiment.”
This opening sequence is undoubtedly one of the goofiest openers ever committed to film. Make sure to disregard the first two minutes or so as it’s no indication of what’s to follow, trust me you’ll be treated to 86 minutes of some pretty good laughs and gore.
Lo and behold, where do you think that canister lands? That’s right, on Earth. The canister’s contents happen to be these black alien parasites that resemble either large slugs, or a turd from someone who’s on a high fiber diet, I haven’t decided yet. Anyway the parasites enter a human host by flying into their mouth, make their way to the brain, lay eggs and effectively turn the human host into a zombie.
Flash to present day, erm, present day 1986 that is. On a frat prank two of the main characters, Chris and J.C. find the cryogenically preserved body of the poor bastard from 30 years ago who was host to one of the aforementioned turds, I mean slugs, I mean, ah hell, you pick one Anyway, the body defrosts, the turd slug thingy passes from host to host and multiplies, and you can probably pick it up from there.
This film’s got everything that made the b-horror films of the 80’s so great. Gratuitous nudity, crappy 80’s music, fraternity pranks, a group of antagonists that are of the “GQ” variety (what society now dubs as “metrosexual.”) But best of all, it’s got Tom Atkins, who plays the sarcastic, pissed off, suicidal cop whose one liners throughout make the movie.
