Voices From Beyond is more of a murder mystery than a horror flick. A rich guy with a terrible attitude is murdered and his daughter is trying to figure out who did it. It could be anybody, since he was cruel to everybody. It’s hard to blame him though, as most of the people are quite despicable. In the process, we hear some commentary from the dead guy himself (the “voices from beyond”) and learn about some family secrets.
We are treated to some good Fulci gore in this movie, to the tune of decomposing corpses, autopsies, and a dose of some internal hemorrhaging. We also see some nudity as well, as a wife and daughter take turns undressing throughout the film. I’m convinced that Italian television is the bomb. Fulci also gets major points for finding a way to put zombies into a murder mystery. The man was a master.
Voices was very well crafted and flowed good. I don’t recall being bored any. The acting was good (Fulci was a surgeon in this one). I was surprised by who did the murders. The ending was surprising too, but for different reasons. Let’s say I would do things a lot different if I was the main character in the film.
You have classic Italian horror quirks of course, though they are for a large part insignificant. There is this race against the clock to solve the murder before the dead guy’s body fully decomposes. They explained the reasoning for this, but I was lost in the metaphysics of it all. It wasn’t a big deal though. There were also a couple quirky dream sequences and a really odd uninitiated extended laugh towards the end that made me shrug. Again, not really an issue.
