When the weather starts to feel a little nippy you know that the holiday films are right around the corner. With the seasonal change one of the heavy hitters of the season has came to take his turn at bat. The sequel to the original The Santa Clause named Santa Claus 2 returns us to the life of Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) who has been the acting Santa Claus for the past eight years.

Truly dedicated to his job, this Santa is considered the best Santa ever by his peers (Father Time, Tooth Fairy), but the smooth road that he has been riding is about to end. The every day hardships that plague modern man start to intrude on good old Santa’s life. With his son Charlie (Eric Lloyd) put on the naughty list, and an intriguing clause in fine print that could cause him to loose his Santa abilities, Santa is put to the ultimate test.

The clause that is found in small print declares that he must be married to continue to be Santa. Conveniently the clause is found with only forty-eight hours left before he is desantafied. Faced with a quandary of parenting his child or finding a mate the decision is made to create a substitute Santa so that he can have time to fix all the problems he is facing.

That is where all the fun begins as we watch Tim Allen within forty-eight hours try to put his life together that has unraveled in record time. On top of that his clone substitute becomes his own man with his own ideas as to what Santa should be. It makes for some great laughs. Director Michael Lembeck brings about a film that holds true to the feel of Christmas. Making others feel good during the Christmas season is something that is desired over the receiving portion, or so I have been told, and the film portrays this charity very well.

What could be better than having a film that shows the good side of mankind? Not much, and when you put the likeable Tim Allen in the role it is hard to say he wasn’t made for the part. The supporting cast does nothing but enhance the film although they are not in it very much. Father Time (Peter Boyle), The Tooth Fairy (Art Lafleur) are two of the newest characters added that add a bit of zip to the punch. Add to that reindeer that seem to have a lot of expression in them and it is a film built for little children to fortify their belief in Santa.

With all that is good about the film it is hard to believe that within forty-eight hours a man can find a willing wife to go live at the north pole. Just imagine this conversation, “Hi I’m Scott Calvin, better known to you as Santa, nice to meet you. Now listen I really don’t have a whole bunch of time, but I have a serious question to ask you. Would you maybe marry me and move to the North Pole with me?” I’m stating this to let you know to turn your common sense off at the door.
