Review

First, a word about the novel upon which the movie is based. In Michael Crichton’s best-seller, the reader is treated to a blend of science fiction and moral dilemmas, framed around a group of captivating characters and told through a wildly imaginative story. In Steven Spielberg’s film adaptation, dinosaurs roam around breaking stuff and eating fools. Ooooh.

Not unlike The Green Mile, which similarly short changes a great Stephen King book, it amazes me how few people realize what a shoddy film this is. A classic example dumbing down a story to increase its box office appeal. Don’t get me wrong, the special effects are neat and the actors do a lot with what they are given. It would probably be an average, entertaining film on its own merit, but it’s ultimately disappointing when you consider how much potential went unfulfilled.

Neill and Goldblum give strong performances as the archaeologist and mathematician brought in to sign off on the revolutionary theme park. Samuel L. Jackson, Wayne Knight and Bob Peck offer some great moments as secondary characters. The film actually isn’t that bad until the dinosaurs are introduced. As cool as it is to watch the T-Rex wreak havoc for a minute or two, it’s only one component of Crichton’s compelling story.

As soon as a security breach allows the prehistoric beasts to break free, that’s pretty much all the film has to offer. Weak. Central to the novel are the scientific basis behind which the dinos’ cloning is supposedly possible, the resulting ethical debates, and the characters’ back stories.

It’s as if Spielberg became so obsessed with the cutting-edge effects that he forgot all other elements. Even the ending is a bit glossed-over. It’s okay for a few hours of mindless viewing, but as far as good movies are concerned, Jurassic Park might as well go extinct. (Boo.)
