Summary

After a moral crisis and a change in philosophy that gets him fired, a high-powered sports agent tries to save his career and personal life with the help of the one client and secretary who stick by him.

Review

It’s over hyped and quoted endlessly by just about anyone who’s seen it. Its love story is so sappy that it has landed the film in our “Chick Flicks” category. Yet it’s still hard not to like Jerry Maguire and find yourself watching it again and again as you come across it on TBS every other Tuesday. This Cameron Crowe created tale of an agent determined to take his career on a less reprehensible path works on many levels. When Maguire (Cruise) proposes that his sports management agency embody his new principles, he is promptly shown the door.

Soon he is practically in need of loans to get himself off financial life support, and his emotional situation is even worse after an ugly breakup with his fiancee. Only one client, the egocentric, mid-level football star Rod Tidwell (Gooding) and a love-struck assistant, Dorothy (Zellweger) remain by Jerry’s side as his life crumbles before our eyes.

While the loquacious Rod steals the show, Cruise provides a great performance, demonstrating how underrated an actor he is (or at least was, before going certifiably insane in the early 21st Century). Jerry’s efforts to live true to his beliefs, even as all he knows professionally is stripped from him, are both painful and inspiring.

After romancing and promptly marrying Dorothy, a young widow and single mom (with a very cute and talkative young son), the commitment phobe experiences even more inner turmoil. All the while, Jerry and Rod look to bring the Arizona Cardinals back to the table for negotiations with the soon to be free agent receiver. All in all, it’s very well done, proving that it’s not necessarily a bad thing to have one’s heartstrings tugged at from time to time or to follow one’s dreams against the odds.
