OK folks, put your brains in neutral and just let it drift on out. In another classic Nerd Gone Bad movie, Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon) is that lovable loser we all know is gonna turn psycho and kill everyone. Although that does happen in this film, Artie has some help from his demonic 1958 Plymouth Fury called Christine. How does one get a demonic Fury you ask? Well ya find it sitting in some filthy old man’s front yard, of course.

After getting his lunch stolen and threatened with a knife by the local 35 year old high school bully, Buddy Reperton, Artie and his all star jock best friend Dennis are on their way home. As the two buddies are driving along Artie spots a beat up old car in the yard of George Lebay. Lebay, town fossil, has been trying to sell the scrap heap for awhile, but the car belonged to his dead brother, whose wife and child were both killed in the car, did I forget to mention that?

Anyway against the wishes of Dennis and his mom and dad Artie buys Christine and sets up shop in a local junk yard renovating the car. As Christine begins to look better and better Artie begins to look worse and worse. Artie soon goes from wimpy nerd to stud lord simply due to driving Christine and wearing a leather jacket. That’s right, all you dwellers of the nerd kingdom out there, it is that easy to get free, so go get yourselves a bad ass Pinto or Gremlin and hop to it.

Artie’s new cool image does almost land him square in the crotch of Liegh Cabot, scrawny and the only natural breasted star of Baywatch, Alexandra Paul, but right before he can seal the deal Christine gets a little jealous. What finally pushes our nerd over the edge is after finally completing the restoration of Christine, evil bully Buddy Reperton and his gang of cronies appear and destroy the car, one of the bastards even shit on the dashboard. A heartbroken Artie returns and sees his destroyed car, and sheds, I believe, three tears, until Christine shows Artie a neat little trick, the ability to fix herself. Now armed with the fury of the Fury, Artie and Christine are out for some payback, road kill style.

Directed by John Carpenter and based off a book by Stephen King, Christine is really not that bad a flick. I liked the book and the movie about the same, although the movie was more of an evil car story than the book which I felt was more of a ghost story involving Lebay’s deceased brother’s spirit. Not heavy on gore there are some great kill scenes, my personal favorite is when Christine forces herself down a narrow alley to get to a victim. Not one of King’s better books, but probably one of the better movies based on his horror stories. Definitely worth the rent or the time if you have never seen it.
