C.H.U.D. stands for “Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers.” These C.H.U.D.’s have been caused by homeless people living in the sewers under Manhattan coming in contact with toxic waste illegally stored there. It’s turning them into large creatures who come up from the sewer to grab a human meal.
There are a ton of movies about things coming out of the sewer. But this is a completely original idea. It’s not some giant alligator, it’s the guy that used to be your friend. It also shows the plight of the homeless. No one even bothered looking into what happened to these people, until someone “important” disappeared.
The movie follows three men Trying to find out why people are disappearing. George Cooper, is doing an article on the people living in the tunnels. A.J. Sheppard, runs a soup kitchen, is wondering where his underground people have gone. Captain Bosch is being told to cover-up the disappearences, but can’t after his wife disappears.
They all meet up at different points, learning that the NRC {Nuclear Regulatory commission} are covering up the toxic dump. They are aware of the C.H.U.D.’s, but are trying to cover it up by flooding the sewers with gas to kill them all.
The creatures are rarely shown, but look good on the small budget the movie had. There is a nice amount of gore, but no real nudity. The biggest problem I had with this movie was the large amount of talking done in between gore killings creature sightings. While I don’t mind a good plot, this movie overdoes it at times. The movie just leaves you wanting for more then it delivers.
Even with these problems, I liked the movie anyway. The lunatic homeless guy preaching with a knife in the soup kitchen. The dead dog hanging in a cellar for no apparant reason. And the Captain finding his own wifes head on the beach. Those are just some of the things that just make this movie memorable. They in no way moved the story forward, the were just put in to be funny I guess. They were a nice break from the “running around trying to figure out whats going on thing” that plagues alot of movies. This movie is a nice change of pace, and good for more then a laugh.
