A group of kids at a boarding school play a game based on manipulation and deception called “Cry Wolf.” A local teen’s been murdered in the nearby wilderness, and the teens decide it’s time to play the game for real. They make up a serial killer and using the internet and other gadgetry, it spreads like wildfire. One of them may be taking the game too seriously, and things quickly get bloody.

Cry Wolf is a smart new slasher that might not be a slasher. The entire group is centered around the goal of misleading each other, and that makes for a nice setting for a horror whodunit.

I’m really enjoying this new trend of making slasher flicks with plots and new ideas, I think twenty-five years of Jason imitators has covered it.

First High Tension was absolutely brilliant as how slashers would be in real life, and now Cry Wolf, a more lighthearted jaunt through killerville. It’s as if all the slasher ingredients were put together, but the recipe is all different, and it comes out quite tasty.

A cast of fresh faces and decent characterization for each actually made me care a little about them, which is a challenge since I hate teenagers and the rich, and they were all rich teenagers. But I wanted the troubled new kid to do the smartass redhead right away. Not as much as I wanted to do her, of course, but still, I was interested in someone banging her out. I’m just messing with you, I’m not that much of a pig. She was really cute though.

No nudity and except for a couple flashes, very little gore involved. The movie is being pushed as “uncut,” but that doesn’t really mean there’s anything shocking here, and there isn’t. It’s a good, solid story though, with a nice ending and keeps you guessing and watching. Also Bon Jovi’s in it, and he’s surprisingly likeable.
