While wandering in the woods, three plane crash survivors in Alaska begin to notice that they are not alone. A huge Kodiak bear has picked up the blood scent of the wounded men and is closing in on them. Now faced with a battle against the elements, each other and a ravenous bear, the three must unite or they each will be pushed over the edge.
Anthony Hopkins stars as Charles Morse, a billionaire who has it all but is still unhappy. Hopkins plays the character as about as exciting as a container of plain yogurt, but that is the way he is supposed to be. Alec Baldwin plays Robert Green, the studly, somewhat sleazy photographer and Harold Perrineau of Oz plays Stephen. With only three stars in the main roles you can see that there is not going to be a very high body count and with the talent involved you can probably guess who is gonna get snacked on first.
After about twenty minutes the movie turns into a long chase flick as the heroes try to evade and outwit the monster bear, played by renowned bear actor Bart the Bear. Charles is almost like freaking MacGuyver as he can come up with all sorts of neat little tricks like making a compass or rubbing two Smurfs together to create a wonderful and totally carb free breakfast entree. As the film progresses we learn a little more about Robert and Charles and something they both have in common.
Full of backstabbing and some crazy bear stalking, The Edge is not too bad a flick. Although I have been in the woods with bears before and two things: one, no bear is ever going to sneak up on anybody, they are pretty noisy. Two, long before you ever see a bear you’re gonna smell it, so some of the “stealth” the bear has in this movie is way overdone.
If your a fan of animal flicks then I highly recommend this “Jaws with Paws” but if your looking for something a little stronger and bloodier, then try Night of the Grizzly.
