A trio of rogue scientists and their “cargo” board a plane to France. While in the air the plane encounters crazy turbulence, setting free the cargo, which happens to be a woman carrying a zombie virus. Madness ensues.
First off, Plane Dead: Zombies on a Plane a.k.a. Flight of the Living Dead: Outbreak on a Plane was made before Snakes on a Plane. Let’s just get that out of the way. Nobody is copying anything here. Well, not from Snakes anyway.
Pretty much every character we’re introduced to is a jackass, which of course they’re all zombie chow anyway but it would be nice to have someone to give a damn about. Ah well, sit back and enjoy the noshing.
Actually there was one person I liked, a nun that managed to give a guy the sign of the cross that totally looked like a “fuck you asshat” that was superb. Kudos, nun-playing actress. Thank you for being the lone female that wasn’t a turbo skank, a bitch or a worthless whiner.
The cast contains quite a few familiar actors including Richard Tyson, Brain Thompson (love him!), Kevin O’Connor, Erick Avari and Dale Midkiff (making this the second time I’ve seen his wife comes back from the dead in a movie), insuring you’ll have fun playing; “Hey it’s that guy from that one movie.”
The zombies are quick, which I normally don’t like; I come down on the side of shambling every time. I didn’t mind the fast zombies here, probably because they were scientifically engineered. Their screeching and twitching was cool and the makeup well done.
My chief complaint is the wait time until the good stuff. Things don’t get really zombiriffic until the 50 minute mark. When the shit does hit the fan it is full of awesome but I nearly fell asleep getting there. The movie also requires suspension of disbelief. Zombies, I can believe. Guns shooting everywhere and bombs exploding while not doing much more damage to the airplane than breaking the radio and a little charring? That one I find harder to buy.
FOTLD is a decent zombie flick that’s slow but is good mindless fun in the second half. I wouldn’t pay to see it in the theater but it’s an ok rental. The gore was good, most of the acting was passable and quite a few lines were really funny.
