A “prequel” of sorts to the previous Gingermovies, although I see this more as a stand alone movie rather than a prequel because it really has nothing to do with the first two movies other than the Fitzgerald girls Brigitte and Ginger. Ginger Snaps Back takes us back to 1815 at a trading company outpost in the wilderness. Each spring 36 men traveled out to Hudson Bay with animal pelts, these boatmen would usually return with provisions to last for the harsh winter, however, this year 1815 the men never made it back.
Needless to say, the Fitzgerald sisters are at it again, each has sworn to the other a pact, bonded in blood, that they shall remain “together forever, no matter the cost.” Sounds familiar doesn’t it. Now I’m not going to say that this was the exact same movie as the first Ginger Snaps but side by side, the plotlines are very similar, but with this movie missing the über sarcastic teen angst.
No matter, I did enjoy Ginger Snaps Back just as much as I did the previous two movies. As a matter of fact, this one may be just what those who are looking for more gore in their werewolf stories. In my opinion Back has more gore than part 1 and 2 combined. The writers also included the element of isolation for this movie. Everyone is stuck at this outpost in the middle of winter, and pretty much surrounded by werewolf’s, they have nowhere to go, and they are running out of food.
The gore effects were done by KNB EFX (Evil Dead, From Dusk Til Dawn), one of my favorite gore houses, and it shows, we are also (finally) treated to a brief shot of Katharine Isabelle in the buff (no stand ins here!).
In summary, as I mentioned this movie is VERY derivative of the first, but I never found myself disliking any part. A worthy addition to the Ginger Snaps family.
