Short Summary
Zhang Yimou’s take on the Rashomon formula is epic and visually sumptuous.
Review
It took far too long for this gorgeously photographed kung-fu epic to reach our fair shores, but when it did, thankfully, it was not chopped to pieces like many other Chinese films have when presented to American audiences.
Anyway, this movie is noteable for featuring Jet Li in the role that he took instead of serving as yet another piece in the Matrix sequels and he made a wise decision he actually gets lots of screen time and his skills are shown off beautifully in some of the most artistic use of action movie cliches like bullet time. In the middle of this film about one man telling different versions of the same tale is a turbulent love story that is one of the most effective that Asian cinema had outside of In The Mood For Love and went pretty unchallenged until Yimou’s House Of Flying Dagger. There’s something for both you and your girl here, as there’s kung-fu and romance. Yeah, you’ll have to read subtitles unless you want to listen to a crappy English dub. Suck up and deal you don’t read enough, anyway.
