When you have thoughts of the great American West, your mind would probably wander to the images of Cowboys, of Indians, and the gun battles that have been portrayed on screen. One image that will reside forever with the west is that of the horse. If the dog were man’s best friend today, the horse would easily be considered that of the western era.
The film Hidalgo, almost along the lines of Seabiscuit, shows us the relationship behind man and horse and how powerful a connection it can be. The film revolves around the character portrayed by Viggo Mortenson and his horse Hidalgo. Together they are known as the world’s greatest long distance runners. This claim will be put to the test when the pair is invited overseas to join in the greatest horse race ever. The race covers three thousand square miles of unforgiving terrain in the Sierra Dessert.
The race will answer many questions for Viggo and Hidalgo as they suffer the heat of the desert, and they will come to have a greater understanding of who they are. Although not something that stands out of the ordinary as far as the story line goes, Viggo Mortenson somehow brings this story to life. He has transformed himself from the King in The Lord of the Rings into a man who rides along with ghost.
Which brings me to this question? The background story of his past and his continual refusal for anyone to address it is confusing. How did this man get to the point that he would turn his back on his heritage? Certainly there is an intriguing story there, but it was not explained well enough for me to say that the storyline was developed. Another underdeveloped relationship stems from the man that is assigned to help him in the race. His character is very rarely used, but when he is onscreen, he brings a laugh.
