Based on the book by Peter Benchley this four hour miniseries tells the story of Graves Point. Graves Point is a small fishing community that is being besieged on by a giant squid, that is not only ruining the fishing business but snacking on the local residents as well. Mayor Graves, the town is named after his family, begins to hire local fisherman and bad asses to go and kill the squid, all fail and are eaten, of course.
It is not until harbor master Whip Dalton, played by CSI’s William Peterson, his helicopter pilot girlfriend Kathryn, and a french scientist who knows all there is to know about squids, go on the hunt that you know the squid is in trouble. There is a good surprise halfway through the series that will get you to watch the second half.
The effects are not all that bad seeing as how it was a TV movie but there are definite times when you can tell that it just a large rubber bladder with arms. As you watch this one you will in no doubt draw the comparisons to Jaws, of which there are many, but all and all the beast is not that bad even if it is Jaws with a squid instead of a shark.
