Out of all the emotions that can empower love would have to be on the top of the list. In the search of love’ mankind has fought their neighbor’ and killed their kin. It is the emotion that can turn off the sanity of thought’ and soar heart rates to new heights. It is this emotion’ love. That is the basis of the film Troy. It is the basis for a war that lasted over ten years and all for the purpose of one man wanting to be with one woman namely Helen of Troy (Diane Kruger). We start the film watching the proceedings of a peace treaty between Troy and the representatives of the consolidated Greek nations.
This peace treaty will save thousands of lives and protect the integrity of both nations. Orlando Bloom plays as Paris the prince of Troy’ and in his youthful exuberance has tasted the love of one of the Greek Kings wives. It is a fallacy that he finds himself encased in’ and without caring for the consequences of his actions takes the queen with him on his journey home. It is a slight that is not taken lightly’ and the reason used for men of power to take up the sword and put down the feather of peace. From this point forward we all know what is to happen. Two nations will go to war. One on the grounds that it has been slighted and must avenge the honor of one of its kings and the other to protect the foolishness of sprouting love. It is a war that in history is immortalized’ and the two main characters step into the forefront in this film.
Achilles (Brad Pitt) is the perfect soldier. From the very first scenes, you know his gift is death. He is heralded throughout the known world for his skill and it is he that is called upon to help in the greatest war ever fought. On the side of Troy they have Hector (Eric Bana)’ a skilled warrior also and some say as great as Achilles. He only wants to serve his country’ and unlike his younger brother thinks about the consequences of his actions on his fellow men before himself. It sets a stage pitting two men’ looking for different things on the same path’ and no better men could have been chosen.
Brad Pitt wears the battle gear of Achilles very well’ and establishes a believability to his character that is right on. Although the movie which clocks in at two hours and forty three minutes loses speed at times the battle scenes are what drives the film. I originally wondered why a film of this nature would be released in the summer instead of the months of November or Christmas (months usually associated with Oscar nominations) and I had my answer within the hour. The film does not spend much time delving into character development’ but relies on the intensity of its action scenes.
