Remember the good old days of monster movie making when a great beast would be awoken by humankinds advances into an uncontrolled environment? Like the great Toho movies of old, but not featuring Godzilla the same circumstances apply. From Director Rob Bowman comes Reign of Fire.
When twelve year old Quinn Ambercromby (Christian Bale) and his mother (Alice Krige) stumble upon a centuries old creature that breathes fire. When awoken the dragon dung hits the fan. The campiness of the old monster films had a sort of childlike charm that made them watchable even today. Even with the original godzilla film it warned against what nuclear power might bring to humankind.
Reign of Fire doesn’t try to get that deep (oh,oh). This film mixes modern day humanity with medieval fantasy to create a total world like Jurassic Park where man is fighting for his very existence. Twenty years later the creature has spawned, and effectively devastated the human race. Forced to live in meager existence with little or no food the future looks pretty bleak. To save human kind at this time you would need a superhero right? Who you gonna call? You call Matthew McConaughey as Denton Van Zan.
You might remember Matthew from such films as A Time to Kill, and The Wedding Planner. If the visual image of him brings thoughts of the southern ice tea lawyer to your mind please place them in the trash to your left. Matthew looks like he has been hitting the creatine shakes with Barry Bonds with the new pumped up look. Physically matching a Vin Diesel he comes to town with an offer and an attitude, claiming to have a way to kill the creatures. His character brings also something the people haven’t had in a long time, and that is the hope that things could change.
His acting is probably the best thing about the film. With help in hand the greatest face off between two species begins for the rule of earth. A handful of human beings left against thousands of fire breathing creatures. Could I borrow a draqon suit from anybody? What this film tries to do, and what it accomplishes are like a clashing a root beer and sprite. It doesn’t mesh.
Once you get by the terrific looking creatures, and some cool action scenes you will realize that the movie doesn’t hold much of a story line. Can I imagine creatures coming, and taking over? Yes, but not with the technology that we have know. I kept asking myself, “If man couldn’t beat them with modern machines and technology, how are these yahoos going to do it with a knife and fork.” While watching the movie you realize that if you don’t think to hard it rocks, but don’t stop eating the popcorn while watching this flick.
