Review
Box of tissues by my side, I was prepared for a tear-jerker when I rented this winner of the 2005 Best Picture at the Academy Awards. While there was plenty of time to cry near the end, however, a broad smile crossed my lips on more than one occasion during the film’s first half.
Eastwood perfectly portrays the grizzled boxing trainer who, initially, wouldn’t entertain the notion of training a girl. Freeman, meanwhile, is his serious, long-time foil and Swank earns her Best Actress statue with the performance of a hard-working, naive southern boxer who is polite out of the ring and a menace inside of it. The chemistry among these three had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion.
As the last quarter of the movie proves, however, this is far from a comedy. Without giving away a rather gigantic twist in the plot, allow me to say that boxing ceases to become any sort of theme. Instead, life decisions are faced by characters whose backgrounds and identities are interwoven as they forge a path together against the strongest of odds. The emotional climax is difficult to stomach, but the story is nevertheless inspiring and the acting is as good as it gets.
