Short Summary
The middle aged manager of a magazine’s ad sales team is faced with a 26-year old boss after some corporate restructuring. The young punk also happens to be sleeping with his college aged daughter.
Review
Humor, corporate satire and emotional family drama combine in this enjoyable film about a middle aged man whose world suddenly comes crashing down on multiple fronts. Dan Foreman (Quaid) is a 51-year old ad executive with a mortgage, a wife and two daughters, one in high school and the other in college. In a very brief span, his eldest child Alex (Johannson) announces that she wants to transfer from a state college to N.Y.U., his wife announces that she is having yet another child, and his professional life is jeopardized by needless company realignment. Dan’s new boss is Carter, an inexperienced, high strung hotshot who talks incessantly about “synergy” and who also happens to be half his age.
Grace, who plays the career driven executive in training, is maddeningly irritating, which makes for some funny interaction with Quaid, who is saddled with the dual responsibilities of supporting his family and keeping his job. Johansson is typically strong in this film as well. What separates In Good Company from standard light hearted fare is the honesty of the conflict.
Dan’s problems at home and at work are all too real, and easy to relate to for anyone subjected to a complicated home life and an ever changing corporate environment. It concludes somewhat neatly, and with some highly cheesy moments, but not so much so as to appear completely bogus. Definitely check it out.
And, on a side note, if you happen to watch this with a girl who has a special relationship with her dad, keep the tissues handy.
