Short Summary
The true tale of America’s Gold-winning hockey team in the 1980 Olympics.
Review
What makes a great sports movie? You need stellar acting, interesting characters and, of course, an inspiring story. Above all, however, you need to be captivated by the big game or moment. Even if you know exactly what’s gonna happen, even if it’s fairly obvious that Rocky is gonna knock out the bad guy in the end, is your pulse still racing as the action heats up?
In a true story that epitomizes this criteria, Miracle certainly passes the test. Not only does every viewer know the United States hockey team defeats Russia and goes on to win the gold medal in 1980, each person even knows the call by Al Michaels as it occurs. Nevertheless, watch this movie and you’ll not only believe in miracles, but in a superb performance by Kurt Russell. He channels coach Herb Brooks accent, hesitant hero and all and leads a cast of mostly unknown youngsters against the most extreme odds actually getting the audience to care about hockey.
It’s an uplifting tale of teamwork and passion. Despite the known outcome, you’ll find it impossible not to sit on the edge of your seat as the final seconds tick down in the most important sporting event in American history. Prepare for the room to get a bit dusty, as well, when Brooks celebrates the win in his subdued, albeit quite emotional, manner.
