Review
Adam Sandler, who in recent years has phoned in more than one major performance, is at his absolute best in this absurd, yet surprisingly timeless golf comedy. Sure, the slapstick humor is predictable and the concept itself is perhaps overly simple. Happy is a rage-driven, but generally good guy and rejected hockey player who’s broke and needs to raise enough money to save his grandmother’s house. Unable to score a loan, he turns to pro golf. It’s dumb, but no less great as a result. The movie contains more funny lines than you can count, and even works in the underdog appeal as Happy battles reigning Tour hothead Shooter McGavin (who detests him with a passion) for supremacy.
It’s generally a good sign when the star’s hilarious hijinks are complimented so consistently and effectively by the lesser characters. It’s great to watch Happy struggle to maintain composure despite a penchant for violence. Throw in Happy’s fist-fight with Bob Barker (playing himself), Julie Bowen of TV’s “Ed” and “Boston Legal” being so darn cute as the Tour’s PR Direcetor who covers the golfer’s incredible story, a cameo by Ben Stiller as a sadistic nursing home orderly, and spectator Gilmore pal Chubbs (Carl Weathers of Rocky fame) delivering absurd taunts to Shooter while wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the words “guns don’t kill people, I kill people it’s a non-stop riot.
Ultimately, Happy triumphs over his adversary and brings home the famed “Gold Jacket,” with many repeated viewings in store.
