5 Years before Dead Alive and LONG before Peter Jackson ever dreamed he’d land the opportunity to helm the epic Lord of the Rings saga; he made this little comedic gem. Bad Taste is a completely goofy and ridiculous tale of some aliens who are looking to expand their intergalactic fast food chain by adding human flesh to their menu.
Now I’ll be the first to go on record and say that yes, Bad Taste is an incredibly idiotic film, but it is an entertaining and hilarious idiotic film that happens to be jam packed full of gore. I don’t want anyone to bitch and say that this movie sucked because it was stupid! That’s the point and I just conceded to that! I don’t think that at anytime during filming Jackson thought “Gee, you guys think this part is a little unrealistic, too goofy, or over the top?”
Bad Taste was a great vehicle for Jackson’s twisted humor, and over the top gore, and little did I know that Jackson himself was the one creating the EFX. It was very funny, and gory to the point of making me cringe here and there.
Overall it’s just a really good time! I had a blast watching it, and laughed out loud on several occasions. If you like Dead Alive, then I’d say it’s a safe bet that you’re going to enjoy Bad Taste as well, it’s got the same over the top gore (although there is quite a bit less in Bad Taste), and the same type of twisted dark humor.
This one definitely falls into the “so bad it’s good” category, but it never tries to be something that it’s not, a mainstream horror film, there are no scares, nothing popping out at you, and no creepiness whatsoever.
Avoid it like the plague if you’ve ever been accused of not having a good sense of humor, or no sense of humor. Likewise if you dislike comedic gore, or take all of your horror seriously.
