Billed as Jet Li’s final martial arts epic, Fearless is dare I say his best film. Jet Li plays as Huo Yuanjia. A young man that was continually bullied in his early years. Huo trains hard to learn his families fighting style, and after years of training sets out to be perfect. Match after match he leaves undefeated until his pride causes him to make a mistake that will have consequences throughout the rest of his life. When I first heard that this would be the last martial arts epic by Jet Li I rolled my eyes.
Yeah, I said. How else will he make money if he doesn’t do his martial arts thing. Upon seeing the movie I can kind of understand why he would want this to be his final work of art. Unlike most martial arts movies where everyone is fighting for something other than himself, Jet Li’s character eventually moves away from that philosophy. His character is more concerned about enlightenment and compassion than any film that I have seen. It gives this film layers that are usually absent with this much action.
