I’m sure in our childhood we have all pulled out the old box of toys’ and pretended to our hearts content that the two dolls (action figures for us boys) that found their way to our hands were alive. Team America is the ultimate pretend play’ but filled with the potty-mouthed language of the most untalented kind. A short synopsis of the film would go something like this.

This super group goes after terrorists that are trying to acquire weapons of mass destruction. When one of their own falls to these terrorist’ they go out to recruit the best replacement that they can get’ an actor Sound familiar? It is’ as well as most of the storyline of the film. I’m sure that most people over the age of thirty-five can remember a series called the Thunderbirds. They were a group of marionette puppets that saved the world in cool spaceships. Team America’ in some warped reality’ could be considered the pissed off’ retarded cousin of that series.

Technology could easily disguise the strings that hang off these marionettes’ but they leave them in’ apparently to take the laughter to the next level. Before it sounds like am raining on the whole film I have to say that the sets that were used were terrific’ and whoever came up with their base being in the head of Mount Rushmore is to be commended. Once the initial snickering stopped from seeing puppets do things they shouldn’t be doing (simulated sex anyone) I came to the realization that this film wasn’t very good for a variety of reasons.

The product is packaged like advertising for cigarettes use to be. The puppets would make you think it would be safe for children of all ages’ but when you hear the words out of their mouth’ that theory is blown out of the water. I’m sure some of you are saying’ “everyone knows those guys who make South park were going to go in this direction in the film.” I agree’ but there are always those who don’t know about what is going on.

One portion of the film that I did find some comedy in was the constant mentioning of the Film Actors Guild. It was a funny commentary on something I have wondered about for a long time. Why would I care what candidate an actor or actress endorsed? The world has gotten to the point that if there is a bit of celebrity behind your name it is expected that you can shepherd the masses into their line of thinking. In this polarized time, I found it refreshing to see it shown for what it is.
