Lori Tanner an investigative reporter is looking for her big story. After getting a tip from an inside informant, Lori learns of possible animal cruelty going on at EMAX Labs. Sneaking into the facility, Lori finds that there is indeed experimentation going on behind the doors of the EMAX Labs. Rescuing a large dog that looks to be a cross between a Rottweiler and a Saint Bernard, Lori thinks she has done a good deed. In fact Lori has stolen a genetic hybrid that is more dangerous than she could ever imagine. Now Dr. Jarrett (What a great name), head of the lab, is out to find both Lori and her new dog Max.
Along with the speed of a cheetah, the ability to climb like a leopard, eating ability of a snake, strength of a bear, intelligence of a human, cloaking powers of a chameleon, eyes of an owl and ability to piss acid, Max must have also had the ability to smell like a skunk, because this movie stinks!
Lance Henrikson plays Dr. Jarrett and as always does a great job, regardless of what he is in. Alley Sheedy, the freaky chick from the Breakfast Club, plays Lori. I once thought she was hot, but in this movie with her short hair and the way she smiles, she looks more like Willem Dafoe, creepy man, creepy. Max is played by Max the dog and a handful of some of the worst hand puppets you will ever see.
After Lori escapes with the pooch and brings Max home, her boyfriend wants the dog gone, but before that happens Max has a little fun with a neighborhood cat that will crack you up after you watch it. Pay close attention to the tree in the scene, as the cat goes up the bark is red when Max goes up it is gray and the colors switch with every cut scene. Also Max has a little snack on a prick mailman who happens to be mace crazy.
There is also a scene in a junkyard after Lori gives Max away, due to the boyfriend, that I both love and hate. I love it because the prick scrap man gets what all animal abusers deserve, his nuts bit off, but hate it because as you watch this part of the film you know that this kind of shit really happens. If there’s one thing the Prime is about, it’s the proper treatment of animals.
