Based on a true story, a couple of scuba divers are accidentally left behind in the open water. Floating helplessly, the sharks soon appear to make a bad situation so much worse.
This might be the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. No, I won’t be nervous tonight when I hear a sound outside, that maybe a shark is after me, or even a jellyfish. Thing is, the only difference between the couple in this flick and me is that I’m not interested in diving. I’ve done things where my life is literally in the hands of people that might not be paying attention, we all have, and this film makes you aware of that.
It’s a beautifully simple story, I literally told you the whole thing in the first paragraph. The strength of the movie is how far a simple story can go to build a hopeless dread in an audience.
Lot’s of people will be disappointed in this flick, during the showing I was at there were lots of folks brought their kids expecting Jaws 5. It wasn’t Jaws 5, Chief Brody doesn’t show up to save the day with an exploding rubber shark and a cool one liner. If you want Jaws, go rent it, hell, you can buy it for 9 bucks in WalMart, and it’s easily worth it.
This flick has no CGI or special effects, don’t expect them. There is some nudity, which is right down shocking in this day and age. I thought big-screen nudity was a thing of the past, not so.
Everyone’s going to watch this movie with an “I’d swim here” or “I’d do this” and the truth is, there’s not many options and most likely you’d do the same thing they did, they cried, floated and bitched. The ultimate in helpless isolation, Open Water delivers what it promised, a suspenseful, hopelessness that just gets worse as the film goes on.
