You Got Served is very light on storyline, but admittedly high on the dance end. The story goes something like this. Two friends David (Omari Grandberry) and Elgin (Marques Houston) want to open up their own hip hop dance and recording studio business.
They plan to pay for this endeavor by dancing in open competition, street style. These groups face off in dance battles and then the crowd chooses the winner. Their crew is the reigning champion, that is until another crew comes in and takes their imaginary crown. A series of events follows that test the two friends commitment to one another and to their dreams. The only question left is will they resolve all of their issues before they lose their chance at fifty thousand dollars.
This film brought back a lot of memories of middle school, and some of the activities that accompanied it. One of those activities was the lunch break dance offs when everyone would gather around in big crowds and goad on two competitors. There is something to be said about the excitement of seeing a great dance move or somebody doing something that had never been seen before.
The only thing different from that and this is the fact that this should have had more of a story behind it. For example’ Flashdance had a good story behind it with a lot of dancing, and even a film such as Beat Street had more of a story behind it than this one did.
If high schoolers don’t require a film with a story line of any kind then this is the one for them. Most of the action we follows is centered on David and Elgin. Marques Houston (Elgin) has been in these types of films before. House Party 2 featured them prominently as the three little bad kids who caused trouble’ and I’ve even had the opportunity to see House Party 3 who featured him as one of the stars. So it is not far fetched that when he had the chance he would want to be associated with something to the same likeness since House Party was a moderate success.
