Nate Johnson (Cedric the Entertainer of Kings of Comedy) is all set to go on vacation to Caruthersville’ Missouri with his family. His main purpose behind the trip is to win the Johnson Family prize at the family reunion’ and wrestle away bragging rights from his older brother Max played by Steve Harvey. It would seem like an easy task’ but the space from point A to point B will be filled with the horrors of family vacation. You can be sure that this film will be compared to National Lampoon’s 1983 Vacation when it comes out’ and that would be a shame. While National Lampoon’s film relied on the dry wit of Chevy Chase’ this film relies on the hilariousness of one Cedric the Entertainer.

The only semblance that these two films have is the fact that it is a film about Vacation’ and that each takes their families along. Alongside Cedric is an all star cast. The film features Vanessa Williams (Dorothy)’ Solange Knowles(Nikki)’ Bow wow(DJ)’ and Gabby Soleil(Destiny). It is a very talented cast of performers’ but the sad part is that they really do not have any role in this film.

In a film such as Barbershop 2 it was a good thing to have the focus mostly on Cedric’ but somehow it does not feel right here. Maybe it is the fact that it is a family vacation’ the key word being family. In my own opinion, the focus is a little too much on him. Even with that said the film provides good laughs through the situations they get themselves into.

This marks the feature film directorial debut for music video and commercial director Christopher Erskin. He does a good job of keeping the movie going along at a good clip while all manner of things go wrong with the vacation. It seems that the film begins slowly’ as far as the comedy is concerned’ but picks up speed by the end.

If the whole film could have been based on when the Johnson’s finally get to the reunion, it might have been the funniest film of the year. Cedric the Entertainer and Steve Harvey bring down the house as they fight for Johnson supremacy’ and Cedric’s portrayal of the Uncle is hilarious. Aside from the meager plots that are in the film this is one that will leave you smiling’ and thinking of those summer days of family once again.
