Momma always said that vegetables were good for you, and with the newest movie release Jonah they are providing entertainment nutrition for the soul. If you are not familiar with the story of Jonah from the bible it goes something like this Jonah disobeys a direct order from God, and tries to hide from the works that are set out for him.

In response to Jonah’s disobedience a giant whale swallows him for three whole days. Not a very nice place to think about the things that you should have done is it? Like many of the stories in the bible it deals with questions of morality, and being obedient to the word. It fits right in with the miracles that happen throughout the bible such as Moses parting the seas to help his people escape.

The new movie doesn’t strive to far off the original story except for the introduction of the veggie tales. Now that probably brings you to the question of what is a veggie tale? They are a group of animated vegetables that have been presenting the work of the bible, and important moral issues in a way that children can understand.

The veggie tales have many movies that are direct to the public, but this is the first that has been released on the big screen. The movie in itself doesn’t try to talk down to the audience or preach a fire and brimstone message to you. It just lays out the information in a somewhat pleasing manner for children, and lets them ingest (no pun intended) the contents.

The film is built around the premise of the Christian faith, and you can see the influence of that belief throughout the film. The real star of the show surprisingly is not Jonah or the other veggie tales, but a little caterpillar. He keeps the action lively, and when he is onscreen the mood is light, and funny. The animation is average, and it doesn’t try to be to fancy.

You will find that the veggie tales have big eyeballs (window to the soul?) that very easily emote their feelings, and with voices that sound like they could be off of the midgets in the wizard of Oz, come off very friendly. All in all it was an average animated film with a message that needs to be heard. Along with talking about faith it also delves on having compassion, and understanding. With so many movies portraying scenes of sex or murder this is a breath of fresh air.
