Sex Education has not always been taught in the school system with as much information as it is today. Believe it or not, there was a time when people believed that you could get pregnant from a kiss, or that heavy petting could lead to disease. Sex was a subject that was not readily talked about, the greatest of taboos, until a man with the last name of Kinsley came along.

Liam Neeson stars as the controversial Alfred Kinsey, who with his research into sexual attitudes and his book “Sexual Behavior in the Human Male”, opened the eyes of Americans and a can of worms in the process. Neeson’s portrayal of Kinsey is at times compassionate, but in the end, you come to understand the complexity of the man.

In viewing the film, I found myself laughing at what was considered modern thought on the subject of sex. After thinking about it afterward, it came to me that it would have been a terrible time to live in. Fear of the unknown is a terrible thing, and throughout this film, you have examples of the lack of knowledge in the field of reproduction.

Kinsey changed that with his research, but at the same time seemed to not understand that society has been built upon rules passed down from generation to generation. In his search for the scientific truth, he at times bypassed these rules of society and changed the way the world looked at sex. This film might be being released at a most appropriate time. With the election of President Bush, and the thought behind his election since he won in part because of his seemingly morally high standards, this film can serve as a compass.

Kinsey has taken the complete opposite direction to his research, supplanting morality with scientific certainty. The years these events are happening in are around the 1940’s, but it seems he had no remorse in showing a classroom of students erect genital, or showing video of couples having sex. It is in this directness that is at first surprisingly refreshing in the film, but to director Bill Condon’s credit, also is what makes him oblivious to what is going on around him.

I would be remiss if I didn’t let you know that the film can be pretty graphic at times (aforementioned remark about genital), and that it will go against traditional Christian thinking at times (group sex, homosexuality). If you can bypass or suspend your shock, this film is one that is highly interesting.

Stand out performances in the film would have to go to Laura Linney who plays his wife in the film and to Liam Neeson also. Laura’s character is almost as straightforward as her husband is, but it is within her character that we learn what the good doctor really believes about sex. For Neesom’s part, he brings the character of Kinsey to life (this isn’t your favorite Jedi). With his short cropped hair, and inquisitive looks, he compels you to follow him upon his journey.
