Watching Kill Bill, you are immediately thankful it was cut into two parts (it runs only 110 minutes). Violence of this nature is best served in limited portions, and the feeling of being desensitized could readily be felt by the end of the film.
That’s not to say that the film isn’t good. On the contrary, it’s an excellent action film that mixes what Quentin Tarantino is known for best (over the top violence) with a story straight out of a graphic novel. The short set up to the film goes something like this. Black Mamba (Uma Thurman) is about to be married, when hired assassins attack and kill everyone at her wedding.
No reasoning is given for the actions, but we are clued in that the killers are people who she has worked with known only as “The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad”, who are led by a man known only as Bill (David Carradine). Surprisingly she survives the vicious attack, going into a coma for four years. When she awakens there is only one thing on her mind Kill Bill. Quentin Tarantino has made his mark as the absolute master of cinema violence, and has only strengthened his hold on the mantra with this film.
With his use of 70’s Martial Arts fight scenes mixed with his own special twist to battle, he has brought an edge to a genre that has lost its prevalence in America. The portrayal by Vivica Fox as (Copperhead), and Lucy Liu as (Cottonmouth) are dead on.
Through the fight scenes you can only wish they never get mad in your presence. Tarantino has even embedded small bits of humor into the film, though it is dark humor. The story does lose some of its steam during the middle segments, although you would be hard pressed to find any movie that would keep your attention centered on the action like this one.
