In order to escape the everyday worries of the college party-girl life (not to mention all of those hectic Girls Gone Wild tapings), three young American women decide to get a little R&R by traveling to Europe for a bit of a vacation. While there, they meet some wonderfully creepy gents and one charismatic stranger, who invite the three of them to stay at a little hostel she knows of. Well you know what happens next.
Hostel 2 seems to follow the 80’s slasher sequel formula of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This sequel really doesn’t depart from the original too much. If you liked the first Hostel, you’ll probably like Hostel 2. If you didn’t like the original, then I’d pretty much skip this one as well.
Actually, they did add a little something for the sequel. You get to see a little behind the scenes action on how the victims are selected, as well as how the rich sickos, eager for their next big thrill, go about bidding on these unfortunate souls.
I did feel for the victims, one in particular, a little bit more this time around. Then again, it might just be because they were women and I generally have less sympathy for male victims in horror movies I know, I’m such a chauvinist pig.
The editing was rather strange, IMO. I mean, there were some scenes where you think the camera is going to turn away or just hint at what is happening instead of actually showing you but nope, you get to see the whole thing. But then there are times when you just can’t help but get the feeling that something is being held back for the inevitable unrated director’s cut version.
There was a big-time WTF moment in horror movie history towards the beginning, and at least one more scene that could have used a bit more explanation. But neither scene had much to do with the plot, so take it for what it’s worth. There also seemed to be more filler in this movie. Now it isn’t horribly boring or completely unnecessary filler, but it probably isn’t what most people paid to see either.
Oh yeah I almost forgot. That “Most shocking ending ever” in a horror movie promised by the trailer maybe the most shocking ending I’ve seen this week, but only because this is the only movie I’ve seen this week.
