A mild-mannered businessman is wrongly sentenced to an anger management program, where he meets an aggressive instructor. Surprisingly, laughs are scarce.
Review
Adam Sandler must have kept the U.S. Postal Service in the black for the better part of 2003 after mailing in this performance. Apologies are in order for that poor joke, but at least you didn’t have to pay money to hear it. I lucked out with this movie as I caught it on FX, thus only wasting my time. Many were probably not as lucky. One can only help but wonder who wrote this crap. I could probably look it up, but it’s not worth the effort. You probably won’t hear from them again, at least if there is anything right with this world.
Okay, maybe that’s a bit harsh. But it just isn’t funny. Like most Sandler movies, it requires a suspension of belief to accept the absurd plot lines. Which is okay, as long as the premise and dialogue are amusing, such as in Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. Sure, Sandler essentially plays the same guy in his movies, but he’s a funny guy, and with some witty lines and humorous bit characters it will work more often than not. Anger Management is a funny concept, as timid Dave Buznik is probably one of the only well-known Sandler characters who does not need such therapy. Add in the crazy and sarcastic Jack Nicholson as his counselor, and it’s got to be a success, right?
No. It just doesn’t work. The jokes are just lame (recycled, but in a light sort of way) while otherwise appealing actors and actresses (Marisa Tomei, mostly) are wasted on a film that never gets going. Nicholson and, to a lesser degree, Sandler, have both shown that they can be off the wall funny and alternatively demonstrate real acting chops (see Spanglish), but in this case they are both surprisingly dull. Worse movies have been made, but when you put these guys together, one sure expects a lot better. If you’ve seen the trailer, leave it at that. Any remotely funny parts are contained in it. There’s nothing else worth seeing here.
