I’m sure we’ve all had the opportunity (for us older folks) to see the Shaggy Dog back in its original heyday. It was something to see a man turn into a dog and watch as man faced the difficulties of that transformation. Well, let me tell you that those were the Beaver Cleaver days compared to this new film.

With the rise of genetic testing, the real possibility of mixing species, and the greater reality of single parenthood, this Shaggy Dog hits on subject matter that is more focused in reality. This time out we follow the new Shaggy Dog, Deputy D.A. Dave Douglas (Tim Allen.). He’s a type A personality that is on the fast track to better things.

The only problem is that he’s not paying attention to his growingly dysfunctional family. He is headed down a street that can only lead to bad things until he is bitten by an ancient dog with a secret. How the dog came to be near Dave Douglas is focused on in the film. With these new found powers, Dave must fight against his new “animal nature” to solve the case that he is defending and keep his family together.

Tim Allen is one of my favorite comedians, and he doesn’t disappoint in this new installment. I like the fact that Director Brian Robbins explains how this transformation takes place, and the addition of a storyline about genetic testing is right online with the film. The addition of Robert Downey Jr to the film only adds to the star power and believability of whats going on. This is a film destined to be a family favorite.
